Description

This is another shot of the Dome of the Illinois State Capitol Building. This one was taken from the 3rd floor.

There are 4 floors that are accessible to the public, beyond that, it has to be cleared by the Secretary of State to go up any further. I have never been to the top, but I hear it is one heck of a trip up there, with rickety suspended stairs. I am a bit afraid of heights so I will probably never make it to the top, although it sure would make for a great photo opportunity. :)

Angie: I used to work in the State Capitol as legislative staff. Late autumn 1997, I had the opportunity to go to the top and outside to the flagpole with our staff photographer. You enter across the roof from the 5th floor, and at one point you climb staircases that take you between the inside rotunda and outside dome. It's a wild walkway to the top. When we finally made it outside that day, there was a swarm of small bees clinging to the heat that was reflecting off the outside dome.

It was an awesome and once-in-a-lifetime experience. #9137981
